Temptations

So, this is the part I was dreading. Yesterday I faced my first temptation and I succeeded!! We were going to head to the farmer's market, but it was too busy for me to tackle alone with the girls. So, E asked if we could go get a McFlurry for her and her sister her treat. I said sure. When I passed the McFlurry and milkshake to the back of the car I was soooo tempted to just take one sip or bite. I held back and drank my bottled water instead, yup I said a bottled water not my large Coke or Diet Coke that the Momma Fatty used to always have when we went to McDonald's. I was proud of myself.

Today I faced another set of temptations. The girls and I treated ourselves to dinner at our favorite local restaurant, North Bend Bar and Grill. My usual fatty order from there would have been a Coke or two or three or four, an order of buffalo wings, and a bacon cheeseburger on a yummy roll with either steak fries or homemade potato chips. I found a way to make the meal semi-healthy and low carb. I asked for lemon to add to my water. Then I got the buffalo wings which E had half and then I shared my 3 with the little one, I also did not use as much blue cheese dressing as normal. For my meal I did get the bacon cheese burger with no dressing and I took the roll off and ate the meat alone. Lastly, I replaced my fried side with a spring mix salad.

These temptations were not as hard as I was dreading. I am excited that I was able to reach them so early out and that I was able to overcome them. Here is to the next 2 weeks of pre op then 3 weeks of post op!!

Pre Op Diet Day 5

So today was successful, I think. I did take in quite a bit more calories than I have been and my goal but I came way under as far as carbs and pretty high on the protein, which is ultimately the goal of this diet. What pushed me over the edge was I took the girls to dinner tonight.

So here it is:
Breakfast: About 1/2 cup of scrambled eggs (I measured it as such because I made a big batch for the girls) with 3 pieces of bacon.
Lunch: 2 hard boiled eggs
Snack: 1 Dubliner snack cheese
Dinner: 3 buffalo wings, a bun-less bacon burger, about 1/2 cup of Spring mix salad with 4 croutons, with a total of 2 Tbsp of blue cheese dressing (for the wings and salad)
Dessert: Sugar free popsicle

The Damage:
Calories: 1,596
Carbs: 11g
Fat: 121g
Protein: 102g

Pre-Op Diet Day 3

I know, I know I'm slipping already. I was exhausted last night and went to bed when the girls did.

Here is what was on the menu yesterday:

Breakfast: 2 scrambled eggs, one slice of deli ham, 1/2 oz of sharp cheddar cheese.
Lunch: Second half of the Chipotle Burrito Bowl
Dinner: 1 Serving of the baked ricotta I made on Monday.
Snacks: 2 Dubliner Cheese snacks

Calories: 1038
Carbs: 19g
Fat: 47g
Protein: 95g

I haven't talked much about drinking, I'm making sure I am hydrated throughout the day by carrying my Camelback everywhere I go. It is filled with water or 1 packet of the Crystal Light to go. I usually have 2-3 of these filled equaling 40-60oz of fluids. I also have some sips of Powerade Zero throughout the day; 0 calories and less than 1g of carbs.

I'm also down 4 lbs since Monday!!

Pre-Op Diet Day 1

Up to this pre op diet, I began to make several lifestyle changes. Some which have been difficult, and some of which I cheated slightly. I have given up my ultimate vice soda, which has been done before but this time it is different I know that it had to be the first step to this healthier lifestyle. Another vice of mine was fast food, which I have also given up. Other small changes we have done is using smaller plates to measure smaller portions, using our toddler's silverware to help us eat less, and attempting to not drink while eating to prevent us from feeling hungrier. We also have gotten a gym membership at the local Y, and attempt to go as often as we can. It has been difficult since J is often on travel for work. We have set a new goal of going to the gym three times a week for a minimum of 50 minutes. Now, when I saw we go to the gym; we go, we exercise, we do not go climb a mountain or anything. We have set a goal that we will be able to be in our first 5k next year together.

Now, that we have that history out of the way on to my three week pre-op diet that I started today. This diet is essentially the Atkins diet as the nutritionist wants us to get in no more than 20g of carbs a day and have high protein meals. They told us to not focus on the fat or calories as long as the carbs are below 20g.

Breakfast: Egg white omelet with ham and cheddar cheese

Snack: 2 Dubliner Irish Cheese Snacks

Lunch: 8 oz of Unsweetened Almond Milk mixed with 1 scoop Nectar Chocolate Truffle Protein Shake

Dinner: Baked Ricotta which I found on an amazing blog, The World According to Egg Face

Snack: 1 Sugar Free (SF) popsicle

The recipe for dinner is below, but I made a few adjustments. I used part skim ricotta cheese as that is what I had on hand. I also used a pasta sauce I had leftover in the fridge which had 93% ground beef and itialian sausage in it. This gave me extra protein without the extra carbs plus boosted up the flavor.

8 oz of Ricotta Cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
1 large Egg, beaten
1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
salt & pepper to taste
1/2 cup Marinara Sauce
1/2 cup shredded Mozzarella Cheese

Mix ricotta cheese, parmesan, beaten egg, seasonings together and place in a oven proof dish. Pour marinara on top and top with mozzarella cheese. Bake it in the oven @ 450 for about 20-25 minutes (best) or nuke it till hot and bubbly. I usually made it first in the oven and heated the leftovers in the microwave.

The end product was delicious and this will be a great recipe for me pre op as well as for J post op!

For the day, I ended up with 702 calories for the day, 16g of carbs, and 70g of protein. I need to work at uping my protein intake, which I will attempt to do with 2 shakes a day starting tomorrow. Not to shabby for day 1!

And We Are Off!

Our journey officially began in February 2012. Although, we both had struggled with weight issues on and off since we were children. J had been thinking about weight loss surgery for a while now. We found out that weight loss surgery was covered under our new insurance plan, so J decided to go to a seminar by Dr. McMahon from Swedish Weight Loss Services. I went completely as a support structure for him.

We walked in to a very welcoming Dr. McMahon and Dani, the nutritionist.I decided to grab an information packet just to have something to read during the seminar.  We sat through an hour presentation where Dr. McMahon mentioned several times that obesity is a disease. That really hit home for me and every minute that went by I was more convinced to look further into weight loss surgery as an option for me. At this point, J had all of his paperwork filled out for the doctor's office to check insurance benefits and to take the next steps. The seal on the deal was the patients that they came in to talk about their real life experiences was a husband and wife team. Now, I had my paperwork filled out and wanting more information.

Once we got home, we now had the task on choosing which type of weight loss surgery we were interested in. J originally wanted to get the lap band, I was turned off by having something foreign in my body. The roux-en-y gastric bypass also seemed to be a little too evasive for me. Therefore, our last option seemed to be the best, the vertical sleeve gastrectomy. This is where the surgeon basically goes in and removes part of your stomach reducing the size of your stomach and making you feel fuller faster.

Within a week of the seminar, we heard back from the doctor's office (it was probably much quicker than usual because J was pretty persistent) our health insurance does in fact cover the cost of the surgery as well as the tests leading up to the procedure, we are only responsible for the deductible. We are now doing the happy dance and begin scheduling the next appointments that are needed.

Together we go in to Dr. McMahon's office to meet with the dietitian, medical provider for a complete physical and in depth discussion about why we chose which procedure we did. We also met with the nurse/social worker who discussed the next step of the process and scheduled up coming appointments. At this appointment, they usually have a psychological exam completed, but that doctor was on vacation so that was another appointment we made for the future. The other upcoming appointments we made were for a full panel of blood work, a blood gas test, and endoscopy. J also had to see another doctor due to acid reflux and I had to go in for a sleep study because I answered one to many questions yes on the sleep apnea questioner.

We completed all of the above appointments, J before I. Once all of J's appointments were complete and the decision was made for him to not have the sleeve done but to have the Roux-en-Y, the nurse we met with at the first appointment then submitted his file to the insurance for a pre approval. About 4 days later he has a response of a YES! He then scheduled his surgery for June 12th, 2012. I completed my sleep study which showed that I had a very slight case of sleep apnea. I was given the option to have my tonsils removed or to wear a C-pap machine. I opted for the removal of the tonsils due to I get really bad strep several times each year. Once that decision was made, I was submitted to insurance and had a YES! only two days later. I then went and scheduled my tonsil removal for July 13th, 2012 and my Sleeve for August 13th, 2012.

That leads us to today and the beginning of my three week pre-op diet.
